How To Fix Audio in Post

What are three common issues you might encounter editing your audio?  How could these be fixed?

Very common issues people run into when editing audio is unwanted dialogue issues, inconsistent audio levels, and outside sounds. The unwanted dialogue sounds could be fixed by using a dehummer and denoise adjustment to automatically remove the noise and any unwanted dialogue issues. With the inconsistent audio levels you can adjust the levels in the software. When it comes to outside noises you can also use a dehummer and a denoise adjustment as well as select it out of the channels when editing.

How To Edit Audio

Summarize the steps in editing your audio for video?  Why are each important?

The first and arguably the most important step would be file management, this ensures that you are able to locate your files easily and in a timely matter and know where everything is to make your editing process smoother. Second is synching sound, this makes sure that your clips and audio tracks are synched up together and match up, if you do this as you go with your project it will help your editing process. Third step is dialogue editing and ADR which would consist of editing your best takes including best takes of audio and if there are audio issues to pull the actor in early on to do ADR(automatic dialogue replacement) which would fix audio. Fourth is sound design and foley which is important to your project because in this process you are adding sound effects, music, and manipulating preexisting audio. With foley it's adding or exaggerating everyday sounds. Fifth is background music which is important because it can help with pacing and tone and emotional weight of our story. Lastly is the final mix when everything comes together.

Amish Paradise Music Video Parody

Compare and contrast Amish Paradise with Coolio's Gangsters Paradise video.  What is Weird Al making a parody of in this playful video?  What kind of mood are the filmmakers and Weird Al creating in the video?  What are 3 techniques that you noticed they used to create this Parody?  Use what you've already learned so far in the class to craft your response.

After watching these two music videos I noticed that Weird Al is making a parody on the fact that he is white and does a full 180 on Coolio's song of being a gangster and instead glamorizes the amish lifestyle. The mood is definitely serious with a comedic element based on the production value. Techniques I noticed being used throughout this video were lots of dark and dramatic lighting to make everything look more serious, low angle shots to make Weird Al look cooler than he actually was, and Weird Al does a lot of exaggeration in his character to add a comedic element to the video.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Parody

What are the artists in this video creating a parody of?  What kind of mood did the filmmakers and the artists create in this video?  What are 3 techniques that you noticed they used to create this mood?  Use what you've already learned so far in the class to craft your response.

In this music video the artists are creating a parody of all the different genres/decades of bands. The mood the filmmakers are creating in this video is very playful but with serious elements. Techniques I noticed being used to create this were the different costumes they wore to get into these characters. They also did a lot with facial expressions having made it more playful by not taking it too seriously. They used a lot of handheld shots to make it fun and immersive adding to the fun elements of it all by keeping true to the rock style that the band has.

Lucasfilm Field Trip Reflection

After hearing James Tooley speak at Lucasfilm, what insight or piece of advice from his experience in filmmaking and visual storytelling stood out to you the most?

What stood out to me most about James Tooleys experience in filmmaking was the way he got started. I found it very inspiring when he talked about how he got started in the industry and working his way up into the position he is now. Hearing that someone with little connection was able to work his way in was very inspiring. Now, it's very different for him because of the time he was living in, also the face that he is a white man plays a huge factor into that so our outcomes might not be the same but nonetheless it is still inspiring.

Black Hole Sun

What kind of mood do the filmmakers create in this video?  What are 3 techniques that they use to create this mood?

The mood created in this music video was very dream like, it felt like a dream/drug trip sequence. They used a lot of vfx, cranked up saturation, and green screen to create this. This reminded me a lot of Raising Arizona with how outlandish it was.

A Tribe Called Quest

What kind of mood do the filmmakers create in this video?  What are 3 techniques that they use to create this mood?

The mood the filmmakers created in this video was a inviting mood and more of a "hangout" vibe. The techniques they used was a lot of B-Roll footage of the group just messing around and dancing throughout the shoot to show them having fun. The dutch angles to show the unseriousness of the shots. They also used different locations that seemed like "hangout" spots for the shoot.

Beastie Boys Sabotoge Music Video

What kind of mood did the filmmakers and the artists create in this video?  What are 3 techniques that you noticed they used to create this mood?  Use what you've already learned so far in the class to craft your response.

The mood the filmmakers used to create this video felt very gritty and exciting. Three techniques I noticed they used to create this was their use of color grading, jump cuts, and the aspect ratio. For the color grading they toned it to feel very dirty and run down it sort of reminded me of el mariachi in a way with a classic cops and robbers chase sequence element to it. The jump cuts add to the exciting tone because it gets your adrenaline pumping. With the aspect ratio it adds to the gritty tone making it feel older and a found footage feel to it.

Music Rights Explained

Summarize the differences between sync, dubbing, mechanical and performance music rights.  How do you get them cleared?

Sync rights are the rights given from the music publisher. The dubbing rights are the rights given by the record label. When recording a cover you need to get cleared through mechanical rights. For performance rights thats when a composer is recording a piece of music but they need to get the rights. You can get these cleared by making sure they are originally composed by the composer.

Trailer Without Music

What does the music add to the experience? How does music change your perception of the story and images on screen?

Music helps adds pacing to this experience, watching this without the music felt longer than watching it without the music. It also adds depth and grit to it and pulls the viewer in, it intrigues me on what is happening and what is going to happen in the film. Music changes my perception of the story and images on the screen by putting more weight to them, with the music added it helps the story feel more developed and fleshed out but without it it feels hollow and lifeless.

Iron Man Without Music

Without music, how does the scene feel to you?  Why?  What aspects seem missing?  How do you think having music change this scene?

Without music the scene feels very hollow and lacks depth, theres no grit of music helping carrying the scene along and guiding you through the story. There lacks an emotional connection to the scene I don't feel connected to the scene without the music and I feel very detached from it and I don't care for the characters without having something connecting me to them emotionally. Music would change this scene by helping add emotional weight to the scene.

Use what you've learned about sound in the keynotes and readings.  Describe 3 things that you notice about the before and after sound effects mix vs. the final mix.  How are they different?  How would you describe each of the differences?

What I've noticed about the final mix  vs the effects mix is that each has a layer and theres a deeper richer sound to the final mix that the effects mix doesn't have. The effects mix falls flat and kinda silly when just hearing it but when everything is added its much richer. With the sound effects and foley added  it adds the tone of the mix that it needs.

RJFS Sound Design

What are three interesting things that you learned from this video? How could you begin to start thinking about sound design in future video projects?

Interesting things I learned from this video were that when it comes to sound design you want to use sounds to compliment the noise you are trying to achieve. As well as tons and tons of layering for achieving the sound effects you can make. You can even use your own voice to achieve the sounds you are trying to go for. For future projects I can start to navigate everyday items I have and how they can be used to achieve the sound effect I want.

Sound Effects For The Screen

What is the foley artists' role in crafting sound effects? Explain in detail three different things that you learned in this video and how they affect the final film.

Foley artists role in sound effects crafting is they create the noises using for the most part "everyday" items. They create the noises of footsteps, clothes ruffling, water in motion, etc. Three things I learned from this were that foley is another form of acting, when recording footsteps they tend to have to control their breathing to ensure that their breathing doesn't pick up from the mic, often times they have used their own voice to make sounds with assistance with the foley mixer pitching all the noises down to bury it with the other noises to combined to make all the sound effects.

Realistic Dialogue

What does this essay have to say about realistic dialog?  Do you think dialog in films should sound realistic or not?  Why?

This essay says a lot about realistic dialogue, more importantly that in typical situations when people are talking to each other they tend to talk over each other and sentences will often overlap. When trying to achieve realistic dialogue a lot of it comes from the characters themselves and how well their energy feeds off each other. I do believe that dialogue in film should be realistic I think when watching a film and their conversations feel real and not rehearsed or inauthentic it helps keep me in the world vs the not realistic dialogue that will take me out and I can't focus on anything else.

Categories of Sound

What are each of the different categories of sound that are explained? In detail, explain the role of each of these categories of sound in film and how they enhance the story.

The different categories of sound consist of the human voice, sound effects, and music. The human voice is the dialogue given by the actors it tells the story and enhances characters motivations. The human voice can be played with in film in the ways they use and manipulate it whether thats the texture of the actors voice to fit the character, the speed they are talking, or the breaks characters take in between each other to deliver their lines. Sound effects is the synchronous or asynchronous sounds in the film. Synchronous sound effects are the sound effects matched with what is viewed on screen. Asynchronous sound effects are the sound effects that are not synced with the sources on the scene. Music is the background music of the film that helps to add to the emotional depth of the film as well as the rhythm and flow. It can help carry a scene with its emotional weight or it can help move a scene forward with its flow and rhythm.
