Early Films in 60fps

What is your opinion regarding this new trend in restoring, colorizing, and raising the frame rate to 60fps? Does it help make people interested in the past? Is it unethical? Is it lying to the viewer? What do you feel when you watch them?

I don't know how I feel about the restoring and colorizing. I like the idea of restoring as long as its done well and doesn't completely steer away from the original look of the film. I do think it helps people be interested with the past because of how clear it will look so it's a clearer look into history. I don't think it's unethical as long as its done right like I said and doesn't detract from the original look. I feel intrigued when I watch it because it is a smoother look into how history looked.

Early Film Scavenger Hunt PT2

Why do you like this next early silent film? What is so interesting about it? What are two common things that you noticed about the films you saw while searching for your video on YouTube?

What I liked about this early silent film is that it was an adaptation of the Mary Shelly Classic "Frankenstein". What was most interesting was the way they made Frankensteins Monster look for the film. The production design was also very nice and well thought out. The difference between this and A Trip to The Moon was Frankensteins use of text to provide context for the film, A Trip to The Moon just kind of made you figure it out on your own.

Who Really Was First?

Who was Louis Le Prince? What was his contribution to cinema? After reading about him, what surprises you about reading this article?

Louis Le Prince was the first person to make a moving picture. He was a wee little french inventor. During the 1880s he became very interested in early cinema technology. What I found most interesting was his disappearance before he had gotten the chance to show his film.

Early Film Scavenger Hunt Pt.1

Why do you like this early silent film? What is so interesting about it? What are two common things you noticed about the movie you saw while searching for your video on YouTube?

I really like this early silent film because of its style as well as the story. What I found most interesting in this film was the second act when they made it to the moon and the little freaky moon guys they were fighting. Two common things I noticed were that 1. the quality was really really bad and 2. that a lot of them had the same director George Méliès.

The Lumiere Brothers

What was their major contribution to cinema? How was their device different than Edison's?

The Lumiere Brothers contribution to cinema was the first cinema projector and movie camera. It is different from Edison's Kinetograph due to The Lumiere Brothers Cinematographe not needing to use electrical power to operate.

Earliest Films Reflection

What qualities do these early films share? Why do you think the filmmakers shot these? How do they differ from modern movies?

All  of these early films have a old film grain because of the use of film, they also aren't like fully smooth in the way it moves. I think these filmmakers shot it like this because they didn't really know how to do it smoothly or had the resources to do that. These differ because there is no sound its not smooth and its very dark.

Muybridge

What were Muybridge's contributions to motion pictures?  What breakthroughs did he make?  Why are they significant?  What part of the story did you find the most interesting?  Why?

Muybridge's contributions to motion pictures were his use of roll film to make images one after another in a revolving barrel to show motion when the images are shown 8fps after another. His use of roll film was the most significant. The most interesting part about him to me was him killing his wifes lover.

Chronophotography

After reading this article and viewing the images that Marey captured, write a reflection on what you think Marey's motion studies contributed to the development of the motion picture.  What makes his work so interesting?

Chronophotography is the method of taking multiple images in one roll to show motion. Marey used a gun mechanism to have a revolving roll of film. He contributed to motion picture because of the rapid capturing he managed to achieve.

The Diorama Theatre

What was a Diorama Theatre?  Why do you think it was a precursor to cinema?

The Diorama Theatre was a sort of an "attraction" invented by Louis Daguerre, one of the many inventions by him, this consisted of being in a pitch black room in which a light would slowly go up to reveal you were in another location through a projection. Technicians behind the theatre were already figuring out ways to create the illusion of the passage of time through lights. This swept the nation by storm and eventually playwrights, composers, and directors began to integrate this into their stage productions. The Diorama Theatre was a precursor for cinema because of the way it would throw the audience into another world just into one small theatre and everyone there would have a collective immersive experience just through the use of projections.

Invention of Photography

Why do you think we wouldn't have filmmaking without the invention of photography?  Pick three of these innovations on this list and explain their historical importance and why you think it led to the invention of motion pictures.

We wouldn't have filmmaking if it weren't for the invention of photography because without the knowledge of how to capture a still image there is no way we would be able to capture motion pictures. Photochemistry was a way for us to permanently preserve the images we captured, the historical significance of this was the way that now we have physical images of proof of our history throughout the years due to this innovation. I think this led to motion picture capturing because without this ability we wouldn't have a way to preserve the film you had made. Dry plates were a consumer friendly way to capture images, this historical significance was that now capturing images was easier for the average person so we essentially received more and more proof of history. Flexible roll film was film produced on rolls which made it even more accessible to people to be able to photograph. This was I would say the biggest contributer to motion picture capturing out of these innovations because of the film industries use of FILM to be able to capture motion through all the frames of film rolls.

The Phantasmagoria

What was the Phantasmagoria?  After reading this article, write a reflection on what elements of the Phantasmagoria became adopted into the development of movies.

The Phantasmagoria was a form of magic lantern shows with a horror element. It would be an event to attend in which people would be drugged and electrocuted and taken through a cemetery and taking into a dark room to experience the magic lantern show. People would freak outttttt. Interactive performance is still used today.

Early Humans

What role does lighting play in the caves?  How might these paintings have been used by primitive man?  What are the two techniques that the early artists used to paint on the walls of the cave?  Why do you think they painted with these images?

To light the caves they used fire, and with the fire the way it would flicker would create the illusion of the cave paintings having motion. These paintings might have been used by man to tell stories, entertainment, or even to make a hunting plan. They would use juxtaposition and superimposition. With a superimposition it made the paintings look like there was motion taking place.

Cinema History Pre-Reflection

How do you think the history of cinema has influenced the way we tell stories today? Are there any examples of films or techniques that might have been inspired by the past?  What are three things you'd like to learn during this unit?

The history of cinema has influenced the way we tell stories today because of the types of storytelling cinema had shown us. One of those things would be non-linear storytelling, cinema was able to portray non-linear storytelling clearly and that aided the viewer which had essentially influenced the use of non-linear storytelling today. Three things I would like to learn during this unit would be how influential the trailblazers of the time were to cinema, the transition from silent films into talkies, and why the very first pieces of cinema still hold up today.

The Evolution of Film

After watching this video, what are some of the aspects of the history of film that stood out to you?  What makes them seem significant?

Something that stood out to me most about the history of film was the transition from Black & White films over to Colorized films, as well as how for the most part film has stayed true to its roots and has utilized the same styles and techniques that were used in the early beginnings of filmmaking. What makes them significant is because for something that has been around for so long, you can easily get lost in reinventing it and forget where it all started and where film continues to pioneer new developments it still manages to stay true to where it all started while adding more modern takes/commentaries on it.

Writing an Effective Video Script

What are the four parts of an effective video script?  What do each of these parts do for your final video?

You need a hook, intro, body, and an answer for an effective video script. All of these parts will help guide you with the story. The hook grabs the audiences attention right away, the intro sets it up after the attention has been grabbed, the body adds more substance to the rest of the story, and the answer concludes it perfectly.

Spring Semester Goals

If you remember, we blogged about your goals at the beginning of the fall semester. Revisit those goals when you first enter the spring semester.

Look back at the goals that you set in the fall, did you achieve them? Why or why not? How can you take steps or make corrections to achieve these goals? Where will you need to look to gather help or resources?

I was able to achieve majority of my goals that I had set for myself, I was able to achieve a 75.5% of my goals. Ways I can do better to achieve, the only goal I wasn't able to meet all the way was being able to learn how to operate the equipment confidently. I will try and meet that goal to my fullest extent. I will need to try and work with the equipment more to be able to confidently operate it.
