3 key functions of a boom mic were that because it is directional you must ensure that the tip of the microphone is pointed towards your subjects mouth in order to get the best sound, always make sure that your fingers aren't tapping against the pole or that the cable is hitting the pole because whatever you do to the pole that noise could pick up in the recording, lastly when setting up a shot get as close to the subject as you can with the mic and listen to the director until you are out of frame. One question I still have about how to operate a boom would be what is the best way to make sure you keep the consistent distance for the character when there is movement/action involved.
