Diegetic Vs. Non-Diegetic Sound

What is the difference between diegetic and non-diegetic sound?  What is an example of each that you can think of from a film?

The difference between diegetic and non-diegetic sound is that diegetic sound is sound that the characters in the film are making or even the sounds that they can hear, non-diegetic sound is the sounds that the characters can't hear and are only included to add immersion for the viewer. An example of non-diegetic sound would be the soundtrack to Bones and All but diegetic would be the noises of them eating on people.

Camera Vs External Recorder

What are the benefits of recording audio on your camera vs. an external recorder?  Why would you want to use one verses the other?

The benefits of recording audio on your camera vs an external recorder would be its easier for run and gun shooting and it is simpler and easy to operate. With an external recorder you can use multiple channels and adjust the levels more precisely. When doing run and gun shooting you would want to record audio straight from your camera but when doing a larger production you would want to use an external recorder.

Audio Levels For Video

What are the key points that you learned about setting our audio levels from this video?

When recording audio and setting audio levels you never want it to reach 0 and above you should always make sure it stays below that range. It is recommended to set it to -10 or -12 because if the volume raises or gets louder it won't peak over the 0. When testing levels try and make the subject laugh or make a natural loud noise to test whether or not it will peak over or not. Try and get levels as close to 0 as possible when doing web video, tv, streaming without it hitting 0.

Recording Great Audio

What are the benefits of using a microphone on a boom vs a lav vs on the camera? What are the differences between single and dual-system recording?

The benefits of using a microphone on a boom would be to record conversations without a lav. The benefits of a lav would be to record an individual person clearly, and the benefits of recording on camera would be run - and - gun easy access. The difference between single and dual-system recording is single is plugged into the camera and dual is plugged into a mixer.

Lavalier Walkthrough

Summarize 3 different key functions of a lavalier that you picked up from this short video.  What is one question you still have on how to set up a lav?

3 different functions of a lavalier were that as long as the lav is placed in the same spot and doesn't move the audio should remain consistent, when placing a lav you typically would place it so its hidden from the camera so inside the persons clothing, in terms of pricing its good to invest in a good lav because they don't normally change so buying one for a high price will last for a while. One question I still have on lavs would be how to tell the difference between the two audios when operating two lavs.

The Boom Microphone

Summarize 3 different key functions of a boom microphone that you picked up from this short video.  What is one question you still have on how to operate a boom?

3 key functions of a boom mic were that because it is directional you must ensure that the tip of the microphone is pointed towards your subjects mouth in order to get the best sound, always make sure that your fingers aren't tapping against the pole or that the cable is hitting the pole because whatever you do to the pole that noise could pick up in the recording, lastly when setting up a shot get as close to the subject as you can with the mic and listen to the director until you are out of frame. One question I still have about how to operate a boom would be what is the best way to make sure you keep the consistent distance for the character when there is movement/action involved.

Pickup Patterns

What are the different pickup patterns mentioned in the video?  How are each of them different from each other?  Why would these be needed?

Pickup patterns mentioned in this were omnidirectional, cardioid, hypercardioid, supercardioid, lobar, and bidrectional. These are all different because they all pick up audio in different directions and patterns, some pick it up in one focus point while others will pick up from many different points on the mic. These would be needed for all the different types of audio needed, you don't want to use a interview/podcast mic when making a feature film because they have different pickup patterns.

Walkie-Talkie Lingo On Set

How can effective walkie-talkie communication improve coordination and safety on a film set, and what are some key best practices you should follow when using them?

Walkie-Talkie communication can significantly improve the entire crews coordination for a film set as well as safety, because it keeps everyone on the same page leaving very little room for miscommunication. Key practices to follow when using them would be no banter/jokes, getting straight to the point, waiting for a beat to start your sentence to avoid getting cut off, addressing people directly, knowing when to switch channels as well as what channels to switch to.

The Different Microphone Types

What are the different types of microphones mentioned in the video?  How are each of them different from each other?  What are the best uses for each?

There are dynamic, ribbon, and condenser microphones that were mentioned in this video. What makes them different from each other is that dynamic mics are very robust and durable, fairly inexpensive, but have a limited frequency response. Ribbon mics are very fragile, have a higher frequency response than dynamic mics and have a low output. Condenser mics have an extended lower and higher frequency response, pretty expensive, but are affected by temperature and humidity and requires powers. Dynamic mics would be good for voice-overs and broadcast, sound reinforcement, snare miking, and guitar miking. Ribbon mics would be good for miking cymbals, bass, pianos, electric and acoustic guitars, and brass instruments. Condenser mics would be good for vocals, miking cymbals, drum overheads, piano, acoustic guitar, and string sections.

Wrapping A Cable

Why are A/V cables wrapped over/under and power cables wrapped over/over?  Why is this an important skill for a beginning filmmaker?

A/V cables are wrapped over/under to keep them more organized and to reduce the chance of them coming undone and getting tangled. As for Power cables they are wrapped over/over so that they can be easier to lay out and throw to the ground. This is an important skill for a beginning filmmaker because its essential to wrap a cable so that they can learn to organize cables.

Mono Vs. Stereo

What is the difference between stereo and mono recordings? What are 2 things that you found interesting in this article? Why?

Mono is easier to record and requires less equipment whereas stereo you need more technical information and knowledge before you can start to record aside from the equipment. Something I found interesting was that in Walt Disneys Fantasia that was the first commercial motion picture to use stereo sound. Another thing was that they used magnetic tapes for stereo sound. These were interesting because I did not know that magnetic tapes existed and that Walt Disney was the first commercial use of stereo sound.

Why Is Sound Important?

In your own words, write an in-depth reflection on three ways that sound is important in television and film?

Sound is important because it creates depth within the film. Sound is more than dialogue, it is music, movement, ambience, and more than I can list right now. Without sound we would lose a lot of context for film and television and depth. It also helps provide a lot of emotion to the characters.
